Art Month - Sydney's Annual Celebration of Contemporary Art Draws To A Close With Record Results

As Art Month Sydney 2013 draws to a close, 10 group is delighted to announce that the event has this year reached new heights, presenting the most ambitious and diverse program to date and welcoming record numbers into Sydney's art galleries. Over three weeks 300 events and exhibitions were presented, featuring 200 artists in over 100 art spaces across Sydney.

Attendance in 2013 saw a significant increase with over 40,000 Sydneysiders participating in the event directly and around half a million people connecting with the event online and via social media. In addition, more than 90 per cent of Art Month 2013 events were fully booked out. This year, Art Month also enjoyed unprecedented media coverage and attention.

Highlights of the 2013 program included panels, art tours, debates, precinct nights, performances, workshops and artist dinners.   The launch of the inaugural Collector's Space, a unique pop up exhibition celebrating personal art collecting journeys, was received with wide acclaim. Returning for the fourth year, the popular Artist Speed Dating saw Art Month introduce emerging artists to some of Sydney's most prominent gallerists, an important Art Month professional development initiative.

Art Month perennial favourites such as Art at Night precinct walks and gallery bars, and Art Cycle tours continued to grow in popularity. Other highlights of the program included 'Two's Company', a performative dinner exploring the art of collaboration with some of Sydney's well known artistic duos, and 'The Art of War', a sell-out panel discussion discussing the role of artists in warfare with artists Ben Quilty and Wendy Sharpe.

Art Month CEO, Paul Becker said: "It's great to see Art Month Sydney realising its potential for cultural change in our city and wonderful to see audiences embracing contemporary art in increased numbers."

Art Month Chair, Natalia Bradshaw, added:  "The fact that more than 40,000 people participated in Art Month Sydney 2013 in just three and half weeks – is a truly spectacular result for a not-for-profit in its fourth year."

Co-Artistic Directors Penelope Benton and Alexandra Clapham said: "It has been wonderful to be part of such a positive and inclusive community event.  We are grateful for the support of Sydney's artists and galleries and humbled by the enthusiasm from the public. Thank you for embracing our program, taking part in new art experiences and celebrating the talented artists living and working in our city"

Art Month Sydney is produced by 10 group.

From Newtown to Kalgoorlie

From the hustle and bustle of inner city Sydney to the red dust and wide open spaces of Kalgoorlie there are few parallels.

A place that is 600km east of the most remote city in the world, Kalgoorlie is no metropolis. But with the wonders of the digital age facilitating a smaller world and an ever present passion for adventure and difference, 10 group have spread their wings.

Traversing the gorgeous Australian landscape, our designer Catherine has followed her heart to Western Australia. With inspiration from WA's red sunsets, rugged terrain and wildflowers, Kalgoorlie is now home to our new remote 10 group branch for the next 12 months.

Thanks to skype, web conferencing and good old email, 10 group continue to be at the forefront of design productivity and work practice.

Semi-Permanent

Almost 2000 professionals, students and creative-minded people flooded the Sydney Exhibition and Convention Centre last Friday for another year of Semi-Permanent: a two-day conference dedicated to inspiring all. They covered all bases of design, including photography, film, graphic design, interactive design, motion graphics and architecture.

In its tenth year in 2012, the SP crew did not disappoint with a line-up that held our gaze up until the final minute. The message of the day? Say yes, take risks - the reward is in the journey.

"Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it."
Florian Schmitt, Hi-Res

Reasons why it's great to work in Newtown #1

Amazing cakes from the talented folk over at Black Star Pastry.  We really are spoiled for choice with all of the amazing restaurants and cafes in Newtown, and in our humble opinion, Black Star are right up there with the best.

We recently celebrated Rebecca's birthday with a lemon meringue basil jelly pyramid. Minds were blown and we're still savouring it days later!

10 group's first computer, 1980, courtesy of Steve Jobs.

It's worth spending 22 minutes of your life to hear his now famous Stanford speech - 3 personal stories with extraordinary resonance.

If you have less time, the Think Different campaign still resonates powerfully.

Colour you can eat...

These incredible Pantone inspired biscuits by American blogger and designer Kim Neill have captured our imagination / hearts / stomachs.

Appealing to our predilection for rainbow colour coding and virgo-esque organisation - so satisfying! Not sure we possess her patience however.

Peloton: The Great Winter

September at Peloton in Sydney’s Chippendale has seen a month-long celebration of performance art. We were lucky enough to get along and see The Great Winter, by Penelope Benton and Alexandra Clapham.

The Great Winter is a still performance piece, conveying the act of pausing and moving at the same time, to arrive at a new place. In Norse mythology, the Great Winter lasts for three years throughout which snow falls in all directions and there is no intervening summer. Afterward, the world resurfaces anew and fertile and the world is repopulated by two human survivors who have no recollection of the end of the world, or the Great Winter.

A beautiful and magical installation in the window of Peloton, this performance proved timely, as we shake off the cold Sydney winter months and welcome the Spring’s new bloom.

Emma Anna is a visual artist, creative producer and writer who has worked for local councils in a number of Australian states creating public projects with an emphasis on text, colour, modes of communication and the idea of ‘the mass’. 10 group tailored Emma's website to focus on her public installations.  You may recall her prizewinning installation Imag_ne which debuted in 2008 at Sculpture by the Sea Bondi. MCA: Tell Me Tell Me

With renovations in full swing at the Museum of Contemporary Art exhibitions have been moved offsite to National Art School in Darlinghurst, Sydney. The first of these is Tell Me Tell Me: Australian and Korean Art 1976–2011- the result of collaboration between curators Glenn Barkly from the MCA and Inhye Kim from National Museum of Contemporary Art in Seoul. The most surprising aspect of the exhibition is the history of artistic exchange between Korea and Australia, which dates back 1970s and was built upon particularly during early Sydney Biennales. The exhibition is comprised of some fascinating historical works from artist such as Nam June Paik and Stelarc as well some contemporary Australian artists such Brooke Emery and Louise Weaver, both of whose installations work particularly well in the National Art School exhibition space. Recommended!

Showing until 24 August 2011.

Expansive, Impressive & Inspiring

The new John Kaldor Family Gallery @ AGNSW is a gift to be enjoyed by generations. Lets start with the space. Light and expansive, it feels like it's always been there, a natural progression that seamlessly ties the new with the old. The collection is varied, exciting and personal. Holding over 200 works of art, it includes some of the most important names of our time. Robert Rauschenberg, Christo and Jeanne-Claude, Sol LeWitt, Richard Long, Jeff Koons, Bill Viola and Ugo Rondinone all feature. The site specific iPads are a great touch, if we had to grumble it’s a slight shame there are only 6 of them...

A fabulous opening night event marked the first of many future visits. What a gift!

Inspiration Abroad

Inspiration comes in the most unlikely places. I wasn't expecting Manchester to be the biggest cultural highlight of my recent trip to the UK and Italy (it wasn't), however I was excited to discover Manchester Art Gallery was hosting a rare retrospective of Anish Kapoor, the celebrated English artist/sculptor who's work I'd always wanted to see. Interestingly, many of the works need to be 'recreated' in order to show them, such as the coloured pigment work White Sand, Red Millet, Many Flowers (1982). Personal favourite? 2005's Negative Box Shadow, basically a massive big red wax object dissected by a metal plane. Intriguing and inspiring.

10 group launches australia's first visual arts app!

10 group is thrilled to announce the successful launch of our latest venture - the artwhatson iPhone app.

This fabulous app puts a world of Australian art in your pocket. Location driven, it's the perfect personal exhibition planner, making it easier than ever to find out what's on nearby and access gallery and exhibition info on the go. Browse hundreds of exhibitions happening right now, sorted by gallery, location or days till end. Maps, directions, featured lists and opening times make engaging with art local art a breeze.

In it's first week of release the app has had a great response with over 3500 downloads.

Art Month Sydney

There's definitely a buzz in the air during March in Sydney. Art Month kicked off with a bang with the official opening Party at the Ivy. Highlights included interactive performance work by Sydney artist Tom Polo, who took the idea of eavesdropping to new and public levels! We've thoroughly enjoyed being spoilt for choice with art related events to attend daily.   We've loved rediscovering the different art precincts, catching up at openings, attending floor talks and being rewarded for our efforts at Thursday night Art After Hours events!

Head here to check out events still to come.

Tracey Emin inspires at AGNSW

A Saturday afternoon spent listening to YBA member Tracey Emin in conversation with Edmund Capon at AGNSW was fascinating and inspiring. Emin discussed her career, The Young British Artist movement and shared some insights about life from the unique standpoint of one of the most critically and commercially successful artists alive today.

Emin spoke about sending subliminal messages out to the universe, losing her dad earlier this year, what 'comfort' means in a life lived so publicly, and her plans for the future (principally to learn french and how to steer her new boat) All with numerous broken ribs!
